Morocco ranked 2nd in North Africa by the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index

Morocco is ranked 65th in the world and 2nd in North Africa by the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index compiled by a US-based institute. The kingdom’s strongest point, according to the annual survey, is Product Innovation while Competition remains one of its weakest areas.

Morocco is ranked 65th in the world, scoring 29.2 points in the 2018 Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI), released on the 29th of November and compiled by the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute. Measuring the quality of entrepreneurship and the extent of supporting entrepreneurial ecosystem, the annual report ranks the kingdom 2nd in North Africa, topped by Tunisia 40th in the World and followed by Egypt 3rd (76th), Algeria 4th (80th), Libya 5th (104th) and Mauritania 6th (136th).

In Africa, Tunisia has managed to head the continental ranking, positioned ahead of Botswana 2nd, South Africa 3rd, Namibia 4th and Morocco 5th. The North African kingdom is ranked 10th in the MENA region. The latter was topped by Gulf countries such as Qatar (22nd), UAE (26th), Oman (33rd) and Kuwait (39th).

Morocco's strongest and weakest points 

With the help of 14 components, deemed important to investigate the health of entrepreneurship in a given country, the GEI indicates that Morocco’s individual score is 55%, measuring the entrepreneurial qualities of the people in the ecosystem. Meanwhile the Kingdom’s institutional score is limited to 46%, focusing on the quality of the institutions that support entrepreneurship.

On the other hand, Morocco’s strongest area is Product Innovation, 79%, expected to tell if the country is able to develop new products and integrate new technology. Meanwhile, its weakest pillar is Competition, 11%, linked to whether entrepreneurs are able to create unique products and services and enter the market with them.

According to the same survey Morocco’s scores varied when it comes to the 14 sub indexes abovementioned : Opportunity Perception 33%, Startup Skills 25%, Risk Acceptance 34%, Networking 34%, Cultural Support 24%, Opportunity Startup 42%, Technology Absorption 30%, Human Capital 13%, High Growth 26%, International 16%, Risk Capital 29%.

The Global ranking was topped by the United States of America 1ts, Switzerland 2nd, Canada 3rd, the United Kingdom 4th, and Australia 5th. At the bottom of the ranking, lie Malawi 133rd, Bangladesh 134th, Burundi 135th, Mauritania 136th and lastly, Chad 137th.

According to the authors of the survey, «the Global Entrepreneurship Index is a composite indicator of the health of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in a given country» and tries to look at how individual countries across the world allocate resources to promoting entrepreneurship.
