Migration : 295 people rescued by Spain in the Mediterranean

Spanish authorities saved on Saturday, 4th of August, 295 migrants who were trying to reach the southern coast of the Iberian countries, carried in several boats.

According to Prensa Latina, the rescued migrants are mostly of sub-Saharan and Maghrebi origins. «Women and children were among the people saved», says the same source, quoting Spanish media.

«They were carried in six makeshift boats», added the news agency.

According to Salvamento Maritimo, a sea search and rescue agency that operates in Spain, the rescued people were transferred to the ports of Malaga and Barbate (Cadiz), located in the autonomous community of southern Andalusia.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed a few days ago that Spain became the main destination for migrants and refugees, wishing to cross the Mediterranean.

22,858 illegal migrants chose the route linking Morocco and Algeria to Spain to enter Europe, up to July the 29th, while 18,392 crossed the route linking Libya to Italy to reach the continent.
