Algerian delegation’s visit to Mexico falls short on Western Sahara issue

A few weeks after a Moroccan parliamentary delegation visited Mexico, Algeria followed suit. However, the visit did not yield the desired results, particularly concerning the Western Sahara issue, leading Algerian media to distort the facts. Here are the details.

An Algerian parliamentary delegation, led by a senator, traveled to Mexico to participate in the World Conference of Women Parliamentarians. On Wednesday, the delegation met with Alma Carolina Viggiano Austria, President of the Africa Commission in the Mexican Senate and a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

According to Algerian sources, the Western Sahara issue was central to the discussions. «Mexico and Algeria expressed concern about the situation in Western Sahara, emphasizing that the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination is compromised by external interventions supporting the occupying power», reported Algerian state media.

However, the Mexican senator made no mention of Western Sahara in her account of the meeting. Instead, she highlighted the broader importance of bilateral cooperation. «Cooperation between Mexico and Algeria is essential for building a fairer and more prosperous future, promoting initiatives that improve the quality of life in both our nations», she wrote on Facebook.

«We are united by the values of democracy and social justice, and we firmly believe that collaboration is key to addressing global challenges. As President of the African Commission in the Mexican Senate, I warmly welcome the Algerian delegation and diplomatic corps. Let us continue to strengthen our bonds of friendship and cooperation».

The PRI Recognizes Moroccan Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

By omitting any reference to Western Sahara, Alma Carolina Viggiano Austria aligned with her party's new stance, recently announced by PRI President Alejandro Moreno.

Following discussions with a Moroccan parliamentary delegation led by House Speaker Rachid Talbi Alami, Moreno stated: «This visit marks the beginning of a new phase in our party's international relations, reaffirming our recognition and solidarity with the Moroccan people's legitimate struggle to defend their sovereignty over Western Sahara».

Talbi Alami also reaffirmed Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a speech before the Mexican lower house. Additionally, Alejandro Moreno met with Driss Lachgar, First Secretary of the USFP, during his visit to Mexico City.

It is worth noting, since 1979, Mexico has officially recognized the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)—a decision made under a PRI-led government.

However, Mexico’s political landscape shifted in October 2024, when Claudia Sheinbaum took office as president. Backed by a left-wing coalition (MORENA-PT-PVEM), her administration's stance on Western Sahara remains uncertain.
